Tips and tricks
The following are a list of tips I have found useful both personally and professionally:
If you are at acute risk to yourself or others, present to your local emergency department either by ambulance or being driven by someone who can do so safely. You should not be driving yourself in this kind of state.
2. If you are not at acute risk to yourself, but require assistance for your mental health you can reach out to your local psychiatric triage service (PTS). You can find the number by googling it online, if that doesn't work call your local hospital and ask to be put through.
3. If it's not urgent, a good first port of call is by seeing your general practitioner who can assist with treatment, referral and support.
Please note: your treating team and/or psychiatrist may have slightly different advice to the above on how to seek help when needed, please follow their guidance on this matter.
4. In mental health (and health in general), it is better to take the safest option. If you find yourself unsure and not sure what to do pick the safest option and do that. For instance with the above options for seeking help, if you were unsure whether to call your local PTS or wait a few days to see your GP I would advocate that you call your local PTS initially and see what they could offer.
5. Honesty is the best policy. Be honest with your mental health practitioners as without this they cannot provide best treatment as part of the story will be missing.
6. Seek help early. If you seek help early for your mental health crisis or concern, there is often a lot more that can be done by you and your practitioner.
7. Find a good psychologist or therapist (see further details in Psychology Sessions). Treating mental illness without a psychologist is like fighting a battle with one hand tied behind your back.
8. Remember that in your mental health recovery it's ok to take two steps forward and one step back, or even one step forward and one step back. Every step forward is still progress bringing you closer to recovery and it takes time.
9. Avoid drugs and alcohol. These are most certainly going to make your mental health worse. However I recognise that they may make you feel temporarily better.
